Me: "Find out tomorrow and let me know."
Ashanti: "OK."
The next day, when Ashanti returned from
school, she said to me, "Dad, I found out that she
doesn't have any money for LUNCH."
When she said that, tears started flowing down
my face. It took me back to when the lunch lady
leaned down and told me I had no money and had
to return my food.
After contemplating my past, my wife looked at
me, and I looked at her. We both decided to pay for
her lunch for the remaining three months of that
school year. We didn't ask if we can meet with the
parents, we didn't ask the school to fix this problem.
WE JUST WANTED TO SOLVE THE
PROBLEM.
Soon after, I found out students who have a
certain amount of debt owed to the school, are
offered only a cheese sandwich from the cafeteria.
This process is called 'LUNCH SHAMING.'
As a nation, this is our issue in our schools.
