LUNCH SHAMING is the term that defines a
scenario where the cafeteria worker is ordered by
the school to throw a child's lunch into the trash or
offer a cheese sandwich in front of the child's peers.
In January 2019, the United States faced a
government shutdown that lasted for 35 days.
Within those 35 days, the National School Lunch
Program and School Breakfast Program (N.S.L.P.
and S.B.P.), of the agricultural division that operates
and serves about 30 million students, faced a big
financial hit and ran the risk of running out of
money. I thought to myself, even if students that
receive free lunch could face shame, they deserve
better.
I truly believe the words of Nelson Mandela
when he said: "There can be no keener revelation of
a society's soul than the way in which it treats its
children."
Recently, some states passed a bill to stop this
nonsense. But now, the schools are accumulating a
massive amount of debt from unpaid lunch dues.
