Mycoskie did not want to have a non-profit
organization because he wanted it to be self-
sustaining, and the non- profit sector depends on
donors. Instead of asking for handouts, he wanted
to be self-sufficient by selling a product that was in
demand.
That said, Mycoskie created a for-profit business
with a charitable twist, which revolutionized the way
people do business. In the business sector, they call
this a double bottom-line business. A double
bottom-line business implies that the company is
focused more on people rather than profits.
The business sector also calls people who start
businesses like TOMS social entrepreneurs, a
person who establishes an enterprise to solve social
problems or effect social change. When TOMS
became well known, many people created different
companies with similar missions: to help society.
