We l would agree that residents deserve dignity, respect, support and advocacy. But how do you make that happen?

Participating n traditional classroom lecture and independent study is certainly important and valuable. But, watching
d
someone o something is very helpful in bringing the training full circle.
The shadowing and mentoring component of our training is intended to provide an opportunity to observe and eventually
i
participate n ombudsman activity. The shadowing opportunities are intended to help you become familiar with the people
we serve and the places where we work.
Over the next few months you will be asked to accompany a certified ombudsman as they work with residents, facility staff
and the community.
Training Program Overview
The training is progressive and a combination of classroom work, independent study and shadowing your mentor. The

more time. n order to become a Certified Ombudsman, all six stages in the ombudsman curriculum brochure must be

completed successfully.
**Please note: everyone participating in the training must have a valid email address. The email address allows you to
access on-line training modules and webinars that are required pieces of the curriculum.**
Helpful Hints
• Pace yourself; take time to learn; don’t over-commit
• Ask questions of your mentor
• Be reliable; be on time – plan to arrive a few minutes early so your mentor can provide background information

• Be clear on the confidentiality standards for our program and adhere to the protocol
