In order to complete your training and be considered a certified ombudsman, you must complete all training requirements
and demonstrate competency in all areas.

join our team. We want to know if you are experiencing difficulties or have any concerns.
Sometimes, shadowing experiences reveal a “bad fit”. New ombudsmen trainees may come to the conclusion that the
ombudsman office – or certain program activities may not be a good fit for you. It’s important to discuss these concerns as
they arise. Although it is required that training be completed in full, it is possible to tailor your actual volunteer experience

If you have difficulties with your working relationship with your mentor, it is important to acknowledge that and to address
it. You can contact your Regional Ombudsman at any time with concerns regarding your mentoring experience.

experience. We have asked our mentors to be mindful of their responsibility o our new trainees. The mentor/mentee
relationship should be a professional, working relationship and both parties are expected to approach their work in that
manner.

a newly authorized ombudsman, you are required to keep a record of your activity.
Your mentor will be instructing you regarding local protocol for recording your work. For purposes of fulfilling the
shadowing requirement of this training process, you are required to complete a worksheet for every activity observed.
These worksheets are contained in this binder. Look over those worksheets prior to completing each observation. These
worksheets are specific to each type of activity. Once your worksheet is completed, your mentor is required to review,
provide feedback, and sign-off on your work. You should also enter each observation activity in your activity log.
