The Big City
Driving through Boston,
intimidating skyscrapers rise above me,
Starbucks clutter every corner, wooing the deprived with pricey lattes
and cappuccinos,
and life is a bright advertisement plastered on every bus and billboard.
Gucci handbags and Prada pantsuits for the trendy
and mystifying gadgets for the high-tech
tempt passers-by from behind storefront windows,
while chic apartments line the sidewalk,
their rusted copper railings sneering at the uninvited with a patina
of sophistication.
College students glide by on Birkenstocks and newfound independence
to the beat of their own music,
white strings of iPods trailing from their ears.
from restaurants and cafes,
the aromas of wantons and grilled meat conjures the sizzle of food frying
in a greasy pan,
so many smells escaping onto the sidewalk and wafting into the traffic.
Theaters advertise their latest fare with marquee bulbs burning and flashing
at the oblivious,
the suited people
and shoppers and tourists beeping and swerving through their day
in this buzzing city,
where a visitor’s first dizzying thrill
is so easily replaced by confusion and helplessness
and vulnerability
because everything is so much bigger than yourself.
