She is a girl of eight, maybe nine.
She spend twelve or more hours a day
darting in and out of traffic in ninety degree weather
selling popcorn to gullible foreigners
and sentimental businessmen in air-conditioned BMWs
She has purple ribbons in her hair and calluses on her hands.
She has parents, who probably can’t afford to feed her
and a boss who would rather not have to.
She has tempered innocence, not quite naïveté,
and a will to survive that rivals that of any hardened soldier.
She may have a name, or a dream, but no one asked.
She is a statistic: 7.5 million child laborers
in a country smaller than Tennessee.
She is a girl of eight, maybe nine.
She has a smile on her face and a quota to meet.
