Covid-19 on blood pressure
Alaa Adel Adham Emam ID: 1314
Introduction
• Expanding from China around the world, coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is the disease caused by severe
acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 .
• High blood pressure was defined as a systolic blood pressure of 130 mmHg or higher or diastolic blood
pressure of 80 mmHg or higher.
• Hypertension is the single largest global contributor to disability-adjusted life years lost [1]. The
majority of the population aged over 60 years have hypertension [2] and it has been suggested that they
may be at increased risk from the effects of COVID-19
• More concerning is that only 1 in 4 adults have their blood pressure under control. Blood pressure that’s
not well-managed can lead to serious complications, such as heart attack and stroke.
• As COVID-19 outbreaks continued, a new concern emerged. People with high blood pressure may be at
greater risk of more serious complications from the coronavirus, including death
Methods For studying the link
While stress and anxiety don’t cause hypertension, those feelings can cause temporary spikes in blood
pressure.
In addition, when people feel anxious or stressed, they are more likely to smoke , overeat and consume
alcohol, which can also lead to high blood pressure .
What's the Link ?
1. A weaker immune system is one reason people with high blood pressure and other health problems are
at higher risk for coronavirus.
2. Long-term health conditions and aging weaken your immune system so it's less able to fight off the
virus.
3. the higher risk comes not from high blood pressure itself, but from certain drugs used to treat it -- ACE
inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs).
4. ACE inhibitors and ARBs raise levels of an enzyme called ACE2 in your body. And to infect cells, the
COVID-19 virus must attach itself to ACE2
