Food for the Soul

Competition

To celebrate the launch of Gary’s book “Food for the Soul”,

Active Retirement Ireland asked Gary to head up a team of judges to

oversee the first ever Active Retirement recipe competition.

Joining Gary were two rising stars in the Irish food scene, Garrett Fitzgerald and Nollaig Bourke.

Garrett Fitzgerald is the co-owner and head chef of Brother Hubbard
and Sister Sadie, two dynamic café-restaurants in Dublin’s City Centre.
A former economist, Garrett went on a cookery course in Ballymaloe
House and took off to “eat his way” around the world. On his return
to Dublin, he and his partner James Boland opened Brother Hubbard
on Capel St., which soon became one of the most popular cafés in
the city. Serving a variety of hearty, artisan Irish ingredients with a
distinct Moroccan and Middle Eastern influence, the two lads have
also opened Sister Sadie on Dublin’s Southside. In case you were
wondering, both restaurants are named after jazz songs.

A full-time primary school teacher, Nollaig Bourke is the brains
behind popular food blog Fascination Food. A home cook and home
baker, Nollaig grew up in Co. Laois with a passion for good food
instilled in her by her grandparents, from the days she would help
them out in the kitchen, especially at Christmas time. She enjoys
sharing her love of food through her blog and she especially enjoys
returning to old favourite recipes every now and then.
