8. MONACO Informatique
1983, first company
I was in my early thirties, comfortably seated in an armchair,
reflecting on the fact that if someone offered me a very good
deal to buy a company, I wouldn't be able to give the slightest
opinion, because I knew absolutely nothing about it.
It's true that when you study to be a technical engineer,
you have virtually no business courses. So I took it upon
myself to find out more about this subject, which had been
nagging at me for several months. I went to the BBL where

I received a booklet – a very well-produced one - on the
subject of "I'm setting up my own company". The booklet

explained the different types of company: PLC , LLC , sole
proprietorships, partnership. As well as the procedures to be
followed to set up your own company. It was exactly what
I needed.
In 1983, I asked my department head: "If in the evenings,
instead of playing tennis, I took on the additional activity of
running a micro-computer store, would that create an
ethical problem? He replied: "Until further notice, everyone
can still do what they like in the evening". So I set up my 1st
company and opened a micro-computer store. I chose a
name that seemed to speak for itself: "MONACO
Informatique". It was in the centre of Nivelles.
