Graduated from ULB
Considering my new diploma, the role I'd played in the
cyclotron computerization project and the anticipated
needs, the financial manager suggested to the managing
director that I should take responsibility for all the IRE's IT,
i.e. the cyclotron's scientific IT and the management IT,
which was much more important.
At that time, IRE had developed well and had created two
subsidiaries. At the request of the financial manager, when
we went to see the managing director, he raised a slight
doubt because I was only 34 years old. The financial
manager reassured him, pointing out that he knew me well
and that I was one of those people who, when they don't
know, they ask, and when they make a mistake, they tell. In
conclusion, he had every confidence in my ability to take on
this new role. The managing director's other right-hand man
was also very positive about me.
So, I left the cyclotron department (B14) and quickly
moved to the IT department (B1). My new boss told me about
the need to modernize the management applications, which
were becoming outdated, and that, given the new
subsidiaries, needs would change quite rapidly. He also
explained that IRE had decided to diversify, so if I saw an
opportunity, I'd have to talk to him about it.
For IT applications, two options could be compared:
either choose a "package" from an IT solutions publisher or
go down the "specific development route". Companies like
IBM were pushing very hard for us to choose their solution,
since they already had the hardware and its maintenance.
