Hollister - California - from 3 to 6 July 1947
Hollister is a small Californian town through which a
motorcycle rally has passed since the 1930s. In 1947,
after the war, motorcycling (including Harley-Davidson)
took off in a big way, especially among former airmen
looking for a bit of adrenaline and camaraderie.
At this year's event, there were more bikers than
usual. The story goes that a few bikers had a little too
much to drink and caused some damage (which was
later acknowledged to be minor), giving grist to the mill of
a young New York Times reporter who, not having
much to send to his paper, took the opportunity to
write that the little town had fallen into the hands of
bikers who had turned it upside down. Published in
the New York Times, this information made the
rounds of the USA in just a few days.
