Harley-Davidson trips
In conclusion, if you push lightly on the handlebars with
your left hand, the bike will turn to the right. This is the only
way to quickly avoid an obstacle.
17.4 My first runs on a Harley-Davidson
I started riding motorcycles regularly by taking part in
131
"runs" organized in Belgium by a couple who had
published a catalogue for the current year.
For me, just starting out in the Harley-Davidson world, it
was a real windfall. At the first run, I met the organizer and
her husband. He was a real leader, with all the charisma
needed to reassure and motivate the 40, 50 and, on some
runs, over 100 bikes. As the runs progressed, I became close
friends with the couple.
A run was organized for a day. Breakfast was served from
8:00 am. Before the start, during the debriefing, the
organizer explained the itinerary as well as the stopping
points for drinks and lunch. An important part of the
briefing was devoted to safety, particularly for new riders.
"Road Captains" ensured safety. They were equipped with
fluorescent coats, whistles and stop signs… Their main task
was to block traffic at crossroads, traffic lights and traffic
round abouts to allow the entire motorcade to pass. They
could then ride up the motorcade at high speed to reposition
themselves at the front of the group. When you see it for the
1st time, you feel good. You immediately feel safe. On several
occasions I've taken on the role of "Road Captain".
