A nuclear reactor can never be turned into a
nuclear bomb. The core may melt and cause major
pollution problems but will NEVER cause an
atomic explosion.
Gamma ray (Ɣ)
These rays have a high energy content, which is used to heat
water. The steam generated is sent to a turbine, which drives
an alternator that produces electricity.
State of research
The nuclear reactors used to generate electricity all operate
on the "fission" principle, creating fission products that are
rightly considered radioactive waste.
Several research centres have been working for over 30
177
years on the possibility of using "fusion" in nuclear reactor.
This technique would make humanity's energy
independence possible without producing radioactive waste.
The starting point is hydrogen H (available in all oceans in
the form of water (H2O). Hydrogen-1 is transformed into its
isotopes hydrogen-2 (deuterium) and hydrogen-3 (tritium).
With these 2 elements, we create fusion to obtain:
• A helium nucleus.
• A neutron (which is ejected).
• Energy.
