CARING FOR
CHICAGO’S CHILDREN
JUST ONE YEAR LATER,
ACROSS THE CITY,
ANOTHER STORY BEGAN.
In 1915, the Daughters
of Charity opened the
DePaul Day Nursery
and Settlement House,
caring for children
while mothers stepped
into the workforce and
families adjusted to a
world at war.

As the years passed, the
space grew alongside the
families it served:
• Expanded classrooms
welcomed more families
• Early education
for young children
• A gymnasium and thrift
shop created space
for movement, support,
and community
