PURSUING ADVENTURE GOALS:
Visiting All Fifty States and More
One month before his sixth birthday in 2004, Harley's family
ventured to the Caribbean coastline of the Yucatan Peninsula. They
visited Tulum, a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city, and Xcaret, an
archaeological site near Playa de Carmen settlement in Mexico, which
featured remnants of Mayan pyramids. This site offered recreational
beach activities such as swimming with dolphins or exploring a coral
reef, turtle nesting site. Cultural attractions included an open theater
featuring pre-Hispanic dances. Part of the trip to Mexico most
thrilling to Harley was swimming with dolphins. Cultural attractions
included a replica of a Mayan village with real artisans at work. This
was almost a year after his first, brain craniotomy during the time he
was receiving chemotherapy for optic glioma.
