The family visited Fort Fetterman (no relation), outside of
Douglas, Wyoming. Then on to Mount Rushmore, South Dakota,
where it was unfortunately just too foggy to see the famous,
mountaintop, presidential memorial sculpture. However, Harley's
parents got him a small scale model with a brailled book about this
national memorial. Next, they stopped by a hamburger joint in
Sturgis, South Dakota, site of the famous annual motorcycle rally.
Their plans included stopping off at Billings, Montana to see a glacier.
Unfortunately, because they arrived at the wrong time of the year, the
roads were closed.
Figure 109: Guess what Harley found in Wyoming?
At Yellowstone National Park, they were quite shocked to see such
a snow-filled, winter landscape in June even though they were in
Wyoming. After parking next to some rather large, snow-covered
boulders to check out an interesting, petrified tree, they never noticed
a nearby sign that warned tourists about staying away from
“aggressive buffalo” known to frequently gall tourists. Harley was
intrigued by the petrified tree but, sadly, was not allowed to touch it.
As they returned to their parked car, someone pointed out to them that
the snow-covered boulders were actually real buffalo covered in snow
lying dangerously near their car. Ooops!
