THE EXCEPTIONAL HARLEY FETTERMAN

For a long time, Harley was inconsolable when placed in his baby
bed. It may have felt just too isolating for him because he would cry
forlornly until his parents would finally bring him to bed with them.
Beth soon figured out that when she put a soft pillow in a laundry
basket beside their bed, Harley was content enough to cuddle up there
and sleep just fine.

Harley's parents had read in parenting books that one of the best
ways to promote intelligence in babies was to expose them to high
contrast pictures. They provided him a play mat with red, white, and
black designs of circus animals on it and hung a poster over his
changing table with black and white geometric designs on it. Kevin
played classical music for Harley and played a Baby Mozart video
that Harley loved. Kevin often read to his baby boy. A family joke is
often retold that Harley was actually reading to his dad.
