THE EXCEPTIONAL HARLEY FETTERMAN
VI teacher, Carolyn Mason, checked with Harley's parents to see if
they had received such a letter from the school. Then she began to
explore why Harley had been overlooked since he displayed such
high achievement in all his classes. She eventually discovered through
the school counselor that clearly the school should have
recommended Harley to participate in SAT testing. Harley's parents
agreed that he should be given this opportunity and helped coordinate
getting a brailled version of the test.
In eighth grade, Harley was inducted into his school's National
Junior High Honor Society which is an organization honoring
qualifying members based on scholarship, service, leadership,
character, and citizenship. Harley had proven his character,
responsibility, and accomplishments in his studies. He appropriately
received his NJHS medal of honor on May 11, 2011.
