No. 012 ‘Georgian Embroidery’
Artist: Unknown, late 18th Century – early 19th Century
Medium: Watercolour and silk embroidery Size: 43cm x 54cm framed
This is a fine example of Georgian watercolour and silk work embroidery. This pastoral scene
depicts a young lady sitting on a rock by a copse of trees holding a festoon of flowers. Her
dainty red shoes poking from under her dress are typical of Empire & Napoleonic fashion and
date this picture to 1795 – 1815 in the reign of George III. The scene is frames in an oval floral
‘cartouche’ with well observed roses and lilies carefully stitched.
The colours are bright, and condition is good for a piece over two hundred years old. There
a re a few marks to the background silk. The embroidery is likely to have been reframed from
quality of the glass used.
Donated to FARA Belsize Park.
PRICE: £425
