This double portrait documents a sitting by British jazz musician, critic, and art lover
George Melly (1926 – 2007) for the artist Barry Flanagan OBE RA (1941 – 2009).
Flanagan said that print-making represents a ‘traditional pursuit’ for him. He began to make
prints from 1970 (and drawings) often with a very personal content sometimes used as gifts
for friends. The piece is reputed to have come from Melly’s personal collection.
An identical single print of ‘George’ was donated to The Tate by Flanagan’s former wife in
1985 and can be viewed by appointment at Tate Britain.
