No. 002 ‘George Melly Tie’

                                             Signed: ‘Yours ever George Melly’
                                                 Size: 31cm x 43xm framed

Melly was renowned for his flamboyant stage persona. Dressed like a 30s gangster or Harlem
hipster, with jaunty oversized fedora, zoot suits and of course the infamous statement tie!
Melly’s conscious curated style ascribes to Oscar Wilde’s sentiment ‘One should either be a
work of art, or wear a work of art.’

This photographic portrait by Anthony Grant was taken at Melly’s Welsh country treat in
the early 1980’s. It was first exhibited in 1984 among a host of other national treasures
and shown again in the retrospective ‘Portraits for a Purpose’ at London National Theatre
in 2012. His tie is clearly the same as the one FARA also offers for sale signed ‘yours ever
                                                     George Melly.’
