Communicating with a working Border Collie
Rules as taught by Lynn Daniel
• “Keep your hands by your side, only rookies signal a dog with arms and hands”
• “Keep your communication simple and infrequent”
• “First learn the commands Lie Down and Come Here”
• “Use Voice commands long before Whistle commands”
o “When introducing the Whistle first the voice command followed by the
whistle, so the dog learns the new language and associates the whistle
with the voice
command”
• “Be patient”
• “Don’t overcorrect and your
dog may make you look good”
• “Provide frequent praise”
• “Stand where you want the
Cows/sheep to end up”
• “And teach your dog to make
square corners”
• Want to help your Whistle technique? Here is a suggestion: “when playing a
woodwind instrument breathe in with the nose and out through your mouth”.
