to sacrifice their only son. Webb was aware of what was on my
mind when you gave me this last sentence. He continued,
“This can be taken as an indication of the evil behind the so
called religious wars. I found myself in the unhappy position
of fighting for evil forces and realising how evil they were, I
had to leave. Alone I had no protection. I couldn’t survive as
an Englishman in Ireland by myself but had rather to seek
the protection of a group and preferably on the side of
goodness. Sarsfield was a young man aware of the
predicament he was in and that his fellow man and country
was in. He was a born leader and though Cromwell’s forces
knew of him they discounted the fact he could pose any threat
to their mighty forces who were meeting only light
opposition. Sarsfield was gathering people about him, giving
them hope and useful instruction in their right, showing
them how to protect themselves against the tyranny that was
being imposed on them. If I was to survive in Ireland, I
couldn’t go back to England after deserting Cromwell, I had
to prove to Sarsfield my intention of making amends for my
misdeeds, to show my awareness of my guilt and my intention
of helping in an way I could the Irish cause. I managed to
contact some of his followers and arrange a meeting with
him. I confessed all to this good man and he accepted my
good intentions. He was not actively engaged in warfare with
the English troops, rather he was organising harassment and
disorganised the English forces. He had not the means to do
more. At this stage I mentioned my farm, “Gleen Farm”. This
was a base for the active training of Sarsfield followers in
the Leinster area. Due to my having been with the English
forces I was in a position to know their weaknesses. I liked to
upset English plans but used to stress that bloodshed was not
