reluctance to understand. Arthritis, for example, is a disease
commonly caused by reluctance. It can also be the by-product of an
accident, but for our purpose let us recognise the attitude aspect of the
            illness.
When people are reluctant to take ‘hold’ of their lives, often
they will suffer with their hands. We hear of people having moved to
a different climatic region suffering from arthritis. They blame the
weather; the damp affects their joints, the greyness causing
depression. Usually the person inwardly isn’t happy with their new
environment, though there may be factors they enjoy.
In this case there can be a multiple reluctance; reluctance to
move to a favourable climate; reluctance to acknowledge that the cost
of enjoying favourable conditions may incur the cost of tolerating
unfavourable aspects; reluctance to acknowledge that the social
environment does not provide them with fulfilment.
Such people complain that they cannot do something or other,
they could if only they would try. But they are reluctant. Take the
number the mother who, when she finds her children growing up and
leaving home, becomes incapacitated to the extent that a family
member has to remain in the home to nurse her. Poor mother. She is
reluctant to arrange her life to the changes taking place.
Some people believe that in order to evolve spiritually they
must suffer pain. There is no evidence to support this theory. Indeed,
it indicates the opposite. The earth was obviously designed to be a
happy place, free from pain. There is little in the abundance of
varieties in nature that can cause pain due to natural encounters.
An example is the humble fungi. Fungi have a reputation of
being dangerous. We fear poisonous mushrooms. This is an
interesting misconception. There are three thousand species of fungi
in the British Isles. Of these, only twenty are seriously poisonous. And
of these twenty only four are fatal if eaten.
