cohort of P1 pupils, with their oversized
uniforms, gradually found their feet and
voices; at the other end of the school,
          S6 pupils established their timetables
          and selected voluntary service
          placements; from Astronomy Club to
Chess, and Feminist Society to Needle
Felting Club, Senior School pupils were
able to sign up for clubs and groups at
the annual Societies Fair; sports teams
kicked off their respective seasons with
rugby teams facing up to High School of
Glasgow and the hockey teams taking
on St George’s; at the same time as
          those matches, Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award pupils were navigating their way
through the Lammermuir Hills in their
          bronze qualifying expedition.

August is also the month that every
          examination candidate nervously
awaits. Heriot’s recorded its best set of
Higher results ever, with an A-C pass
rate of 98.7 per cent. Across the S5
year group, 80 pupils gained a full set of
A grades. The A-C pass rates at National
5 and Advanced Higher were 98.3 per
cent and 94.5 per cent respectively.
