                  B.   Modals: negatives and questions

                  Negatives: put not after a modal to form the negative. Cannot is one word. (S + modal + not +
                  SV)

                         She will not be here tomorrow.
                         I cannot hear you.
                         They may not leave until next week.
                         We might not go to the party tonight.
                         Keiko should not worry about her grades.
                         Children must not play with matches.


                  B1.   Change each sentence to the negative.

                   1.  Glen might go to Indiana after all.
                   2.  Jean can speak French.

                   3.  Paul should help his brother do his homework.
                   4.  We might see each other at the game tonight.

                   5.  They may get to Boston tomorrow.

                   6.  He will be on time for the meeting.


                  Questions: Put the modal before the subject to make a question. We do not usually use  might
                  in questions. We use may only when it means permission. (modal + S + SV)

                  May I smoke in the hall?
                  Should we call for reservations before we leave?
                  Must we do it?
