Medicinal Importance of Glycosides
e.g:
1. Cardiac drugs, cardiac glycosides, such as glycosides of digitalis, strophanthus, squill.
2. Laxatives; such as the anthraquinone glycosides of senna, aloes, rhubarb, cascara and
frangula.
3. Counter irritants; such as the thioglycosides, and allylisothiocyanate, a hydrolytic product
of the glycoside sinigrin.
4. Analgesics; such as methyl salicylate, a hydrolytic product of the glycoside gaultherin.
5. Renal disinfectants; such as the glycosides arbutin.
6. Anti-rheumatics such as the glycoside salicin.
7. Reduction of capillary fragility; e.g. rutin, hisperidin.
8. Anti-inflammatory such as the glycoside glycyrrhizin which has also demulcent,
expectorant.
ALCOHOL Glycosides
Salicin
Is classified both as an alcoholic, as it contains free primary alcoholic group as well as
a phenolic glycoside as its aglycone is phenolic.
Source: Salix (White Willow) bark.
Uses: treatment of fever and rheumatism due to its
analgesic - antipyretic, anti - inflammatory and antirheumatic properties closely resembles
that of salicylic acid.
