4. Osmotic diuretic (I.V., -5% solutions made with physiologic salt solution or
Ringer's solution).
5. For manufacture of candy, ice-cream and bakers products.
Liquid glucose:
• It is obtained by incomplete hydrolysis of starch by dil. HCl, heat and
pressure. Acid is neutralized and the solution is centrifuged, filtered and
evaporated to syrup.
• It is a mixture of: glucose with dextrin, maltose and water.
• It is a colorless or yellowish, thick, syrupy liquid, nearly odorless with sweet
taste and very soluble in water.
Uses: It is used as sweetening agent, as substitute for sucrose and as an excipient
for massing of pills and not used for preparation of I.V. injections of
glucose.
2) D-(+)-Galactose:
• Seldom occurs in nature, or binds with glucose to form
sugar in milk (lactose).
• D-Galactose is also present in polysaccharides such as agar
and linseed mucilage
• Galactose and glucose are epimers at carbon 4 and D- Galactose
interconversion is catalysed by enzyme epimerase.
Preparation:
By hydrolysis of agar-agar, linseed mucilage or lactose.
