Rocky Run, two and half miles from New Bern, in that State, hard by which
place I was born.”
**[We will be making reference to this statement by AMOS is a later chapter
about Craven County, North Carolina.]**
The point of all this is: Here are examples of two differing theories from
members of the same family; one theory by FRANKLIN FOY and one theory
by AMOS FOY. Both indicate they believe the first FOY to America was from
France. One says his name was JOHN; the other does not mention a name.
Both indicate this first FOY was in some way associated with the Huguenots.
Both mention this first FOY moved to a particular area in North Carolina. One
mentions the first FOY married an English lady in Yorkshire, England. The
other says he married SERENA MILES in Maryland or North Carolina. They
both also say an English family named MILES came to Maryland at the same
time as the first FOY. (Again, confusing.)
This is typical of some of the data a genealogist runs into and from which he
often has to make assumptions in order to make sense of it all. If that was ALL
the information we had from the FOY family regarding the first FOYs to come
to the New World assumptions and speculations would be few. However, there
is more.
As one searches other records passed down through the FOY families he finds
there are several other versions about who were the first FOYs to come to
America that circulated through early existing FOY families. Each version
begins with the information that the first FOYs came from the Normandy region
of France and each mentions the first FOYs passed through England and later
wound up in the New World.
WERE THE FIRST FOYS JAMES, JOHN & FREDERICK?
One version claims there were actually three brothers named JAMES, JOHN,
and FREDERICK FOY (no FRANCIS) who were the first to come to America
from France. This version claims the three boy’s mother’s maiden name was
