1. A Petition is a request for an application to become a Mason. A Petitioner
must come "of his own free will and accord."
2. An Alarm is three distinct knocks. It alludes to a passage in the Bible, "Seek
and you shall find, ask and it shall be given to you, knock and the door shall be
opened unto you." Matthew 7:7
3. That it is an instrument of torture to your flesh, so that there would be a
recollection to your mind and conscience, should you ever reveal the secrets of
Masonry, unlawfully. It also represents a new word, CAUTION.
4. That we should never enter upon any great or important undertaking without
first invoking the aid of God. Prayer itself is Ritual, a Ceremony of Faith.
5. The "Altar" represents Unity and Fellowship. The Altar of Freemasonry is an
altar of freedom, not freedom from faith, but freedom of faith.
6. The Conductor reminds us that "Your trust being in God, your faith is well
founded." This assurance is given because the candidate is hoodwinked and relies
upon the Senior Deacon to conduct him safely around the Lodge.
7. Circumambulation unites the present with the past, clockwise, to follow the
course of the sun, from East to West by way of the South.
8. Light represents Knowledge, Wisdom, and Strength. The source of Light from
the East, and thus "Traveling East, in search of Light in Masonry.
9. Due and Ancient Form represents the Step of an Entered Apprentice and the
proper way for an upright man to approach Masonry.
10. The Obligation is a Vow or Promise, a formal and binding agreement that
completes the tie, which binds the Candidate to the Fraternity.
11. The Cable Tow represents a Bond or Tie. The lengths that one Mason will go
to assist or aid a fellow Mason.
12. The Charter represents the legality of the Lodge and must be in possession of
the Worshipful Master at all times.
