Genes determine how fast your body metabolize medicine and how fast that medicine
gets into your bloodstream.
If your doctor knows your genetic profile, he or she may be able to determine if a
particular medicine is a good match for you.
There is strong scientific evidence for the use of pharmacogenetics testing in some
forms of cancer treatment, depression.
Modern genetic methods have identified alterations in drug-metabolizing enzymes,
drug transporters, and drug receptors that, at least in part, explain many extremes in
drug response.
This has given birth to the field of pharmacogenetics, which seeks to characterize
inter-individual drug response variability at the genes level.
Pharmacogenomics, is often used interchangeably but includes the study of the genetic
basis of disease and the pharmacological impact of drugs on the disease process.
