workshops found in archaeological excavations, the use
of stone tools, especially thin stone instruments, seemed
to be common. Most thin stone instruments were made
from materials such as quartz, agate, or flint which have a
hardness rating as high as 7. With attachments of wood
or bamboo handles, thin stones could be fashioned into
handy sculpting tools for carving decorative patterns.
Some of the decorative motifs from the Liangzhu culture
were possibly directly carved using these types of tools
(fig. 14, lot 2702). The straight lines in the crown of
