           Deftly carved as a larger and smaller finger citron fruit borne on a   Crisply carved as a recumbent horse, the head turned sharply to the
           gnarled branch, the side with an auspicious bat, the stone of pale   left with finely-incised mane and hair along the ridge of the spine, a
           white tone with light brown highlights, 8.5cm (3 3/8in) high; together   mischievous monkey clambering up the tail and rear, the stone of
           with a pale green jade magnolia vase,17th/18th century, expertly   yellowish-green tone with areas of chestnut tone. 8cm (3 1/8in) long.
           hollowed and formed as the large petals of the magnolia, with smaller

                                                             The present carving would have probably been presented to an
                                                             aspiring official, as the carving of a monkey hou 猴, and horse ma
                                                             馬 is a rebus for the blessing ‘May you immediately be conferred a
                                                             high-ranking position’ mashang feng hou 馬上封侯. See a similar
