The twin-fish symbol is considered to be one of the most auspicious
motifs of the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang), representing
‘freedom from restraint’ as well as the wish for ‘marital bliss, prosperity
and an abundance of good luck’. A Song dynasty jade dish with the
same motif, formerly in the collection of Sir Percival and Lady David, is
293 illustrated by B.Gray, ‘The Arts of the Sung Dynasty’, in Transactions of
the Oriental Ceramic Society, vol.32, 1959-1960, no.249, pl.90. See a
related small white jade ‘twin-fish’ shallow dish, Qianlong, which was
sold at Christie’s London, 9 November 2010, lot 123.
