A very similar bronze knife dating from the Spring
and Autumn period, excavated in 1977 from
Gaozhuang M18, Fengxiang (site of a Qin capital),
and now in the Shaanxi Provincial Archaeological
Institute, is discussed by J.Portal, The First Emperor:
China’s Terracotta Army, London, 2007, p.64,
no.30, fig.54, where it is noted that knives of this
kind were used by officials for scraping off mistakes
made when writing on wood or bamboo slips, as
shown by the detail from a terracotta official, fig.53,
no.24, of such a knife hanging from the belt. For
such knives in bronze with gold handles, Warring
States period, see The Art of the Warring States
Period, Osaka, 1991, p.101, no.144; and Zhongguo
Wenwu Jinghua Da Quan (Bronze volume), Hong
Kong, 1994, p.271, no.976.
