A RARE SMALL GILT-BRONZE VASE, HU
Ming Dynasty or earlier
Heavily cast, of elegant pear-shaped form supported
on a gently spreading foot, the smooth body divided by
five horizontal concentric raised ribs, the shoulders set
with a pair of taotie-mask handles, with some malachite
encrustation.

The square seal surmounted by a finely-modelled
recumbent mythical beast with a short-snouted head raised
upwards, defined by a long beard and long eyebrows, the
face incised with four seal-script characters ‘Li Jiang si yin,
‘the private seal of Li Jiang’, box. 2cm (3/4in) high. (2).

See a very similar gilt-bronze mythical beast seal, probably
6th century, illustrated by H.Moss and G.Tsang, Arts (seal face)
from the Scholar’s Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, p.152,
no.125, where it is noted that it ‘is remarkably close to a
monumental stone animal at the mausoleum of Emperor
Wu of the Chen dynasty (r.560-567).
