A BAMBOO-VENEERED TWO-TIER

QUADRILOBED BOX AND COVER

QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

The cover is finely carved in low relief with a quadrilobed
medallion constituted of archaistic scrolls within a border with
geometric design above a petal-lappet band on the shoulder. The
sides of the cover, middle section and lower section, are carved
with stylised ruyi scroll panels. All is raised on a foot of conforming
outline.

L’Extreme Orient Co., Hong Kong, 28 May 1992

A two-tiered bamboo-veneered quadrilobed box of comparable size and
very similar decoration, dated to mid-Qing dynasty, is in the collection
of Palace Museum, Beijing, and illustrated in The Palace Museum
Collection of Elite Carvings, Beijing, 2002, pp. 82-83, no. 51. Compare,
also, another closely related pair in the shape of ruyi and dated to
Qianlong, sold at Christie’s New York, 15 September 2009, lot 368.

文竹海棠式雙層盒,其定年為清中期,載於《故宮雕刻珍萃》,北
京,2002年,頁82-83,編號51。另可參見一對乾隆文竹如意式雙層
盒,於紐約佳士得拍賣,2009年9月15日,拍品368號。
