waves, the corners outside the cartouche with eight precious
objects borne on scrolls. The sides of the box and cover are
similarly carved with rectangular panels containing composite
floral scrolls, surrounded by a dense ground of lingzhi scrolls. The
interiors and base are lacquered black. The base is incised with a
Qianlong six-character mark.

The design of a single frontal dragon leaping above outcrops and waves
found on the current box is inspired by prototypes from the late Ming
period, such as a circular Wanli cinnabar lacquer box carved with a
frontal five-clawed dragon embracing a flaming pearl in the Palace
Museum Collection, illustrated in Lacquer Wares of the Yuan and Ming
Dynasties, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum,
Hong Kong, 2006, pl. 166.

Compare to two Qianlong lacquer boxes with single frontal dragons
embracing flaming pearls that are similarly rendered to the one on the
present box, one in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in
Gugong Qiqi Tezhan Mulu, Taipei, 1981, pl. 54; the other in the Palace
Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Gugong Bowuyuan Cang Diaoqi, Beijing,
1985, pl. 316.
