A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER ‘BUDAI’
INCENSE BOX AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, 15-16TH CENTURY
The cover is carved through thick layers of lacquer depicting a
seated Budai with a joyful expression surrounded by six boys under
a crescent moon and clouds. The box is undecorated and the
interior and base are lacquered black.

A FINELY CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER
RECTANGULAR TRAY
MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY
The rectangular tray is crisply carved through thick layers
of lacquer on the interior depicting a magpie perched on a
pomegranate branch growing from rocks, all reserved on a diaper
ground below a band of chrysanthemum scrolls. The exterior
is carved with a band of stylised scrolls and the base is lacquered
black.
