A SMALL CARVED BLACK AND RED LACQUER ‘PEONY’ INCENSE
BOX AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, 15TH-16TH CENTURY
The top of the cover is carved through the black lacquer to the red lacquer ground with
peony blossoms, with furled petals surrounding the stamens meticulously picked out with
floral diaper, above the sides carved with a key-fret pattern which is similarly repeated on
the sides of the box. The interior and the base lacquered black.
