A RARE IMPERIAL CARVED POLYCHROME LACQUER HEXAFOIL TRAY
JIAJING INCISED AND GILT SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1522-1566)
The tray is formed of six lobes resting on a short foot ring. The cavetto is carved through layers
of red and green lacquer with shaped panels enclosing five-clawed dragons amidst wisps of
clouds alternating with three pairs of leafy peaches, the reverse similarly decorated with shaped
panels depicting cranes in flight amidst ruyi-form clouds. The flat bottom and the exterior base
are finished in black lacquer.
