A DANISH PRIVATE COLLECTION
LOTS 185–187
Astrid Ibsen- Sørensen, (1892-1987), a young Danish
actress, arrived in Shanghai in 1919 to visit her
brother. During her stay, she met her husband Jens
Ibsen-Sørensen (1883-1956) who worked as Head of
Office for Great Northern Telegraph Company in Shanghai
from 1906 to 1936, including activities in Russia and
Japan. He was decorated with the Knight of Dannebrog
Order and a Japanese Imperial Order. During their stay in
China, Astrid Ibsen-Sørensen befriended Orvar Karlbeck
(1879-1967) who advised her when she began collecting
Chinese art. After the family returned to Denmark in 1936,
she organised exhibitions on Chinese art and held many
lectures about her time in China.
