A BRONZE RITUAL TRIPOD WINE VESSEL, JUE
LATE SHANG DYNASTY, 13TH-12TH CENTURY BC

The vessel is raised on three blade-shaped legs and is crisply cast in relief on the deep sides with
two taotie masks reserved on a leiwen band, one separated by a fange, and the other by two
characters, Fu Ji (Father Ji) cast under the handle. A pair of semi-circular posts surmounted by
whorl-cast conical caps rises from the rim. The surface has a mottled green patina with some
malachite encrustation.

The K’ung Hsiang-Hsi (Kong Xiangxi, 1881- 1967) Collection, New York, and thence by
descent within the family.
