A WHITE JADE VASE, FANGGU
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
of rhombus section, the protruding centre supported on a high
spreading foot surmounted by a tall neck and everted rim,
finely incised to the centre with a taotie pattern, with stylised
plantain leaves extending to the neck and down to the foot, all
between keyfret borders at the rim and foot, the stone of an
even white tone
19.5 cm, 7⅝ in.
A flanged pale celadon version of more compressed form, in
the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Chinese Jades

A PALE CELADON JADE VASE, ZHI
QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD
the pear-shaped body rising from a tall foot to a flaring mouth,
the exterior intricately carved with two taotie masks enclosed
by registers of confronting archaistic kui dragons at the foot
and shoulder, all below a border of sinuous chilong at the rim,
the stone of a pale green colour
9.7 cm, 3⅞ in.
An earlier version of similar form, with cover, attributed to the
Ming dynasty, is illustrated in Zhang Guangwen, Mingdai yuqi
[Jades from the Ming dynasty], Beijing, 2006, pl. 205.
