A BRONZE INCENSE BURNER, LIDING
YUAN DYNASTY

of archaistic liding form, the compressed hemispherical bowl supported on three short
slightly tapered legs, the exterior detailed with three pairs of stylised phoenix against a
leiwen ground, the base with a medallion enclosing a bao ('treasure') character surrounded
by various bands of studded bosses, key-fret motifs and archaistic cicada leaves, the
surface patinated to a dark brown colour, wood cover
18 cm., 7 1/8 in.

Korea, cat. no. 267.
Interestingly, in the same shipwreck a similar incense burner was found, but cast with rope-twist handles. The
discovery of these two different incense burners in the same cargo seems to confirm the long held view that Chinese
