259 A small ivory netsuke of a recumbent shishi.
18th century
Roaring, the head turned to the left and its legs
drawn in for compactness.
Height 2.4 cm; length 3.4 cm
Provenance
Harriet Szechenyi (1922-2009), Zurich (sold at
Bonhams, London 8.11.2011, lot 1). This piece was
the first netsuke purchased by Harriet Szechenyi in
about 1963.

a ball. Late 18th century
A shishi of triangular cross-section sits with a ball
between its paws, the large head with an open mouth
and a bushy mane. The eye pupils of brown horn.
