420 An ivory okimono-type netsuke of a courtier,
by Masayuki. Second half 19th century
Kneeling, both hands hidden under long sleeves,
holding a fan in his right hand, while the other is
placed on his short sword (tantô). Hair and trousers
stained black. Signed Masayuki with kaô in a
gourd-shaped reserve.

422 An ebony wood netsuke of a toshiotoko at
setsubun, by Gyokusen. Early 19th century
The toshiotoko, a male who was born i n the corres-
ponding upcoming animal year, with roasted beans
on a sanbô in his left hand, throwing beans at three
oni, toppling over at his feet. The man’s eye pupils
inlaid. Signed Gyokusen with kaô on a slightly raised
oval reserve.
