AN INSCRIBED SWALLOW STONE INKSTONE
SIGNED MANSHENG, DATED BY INSCRIPTION TO CYCLICAL BINGZI
YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1816
The rectangular inkstone is made of trilobite fossil known as
yanzishi, ‘swallow stone’. The top narrow side is incised with
a dedicative inscription followed by a cyclical date bingzi,
corresponding to 1816, and a signature, Mansheng zhi, ‘made by
Mansheng’. One long vertical side has a lengthy inscription referring
to the present inkstone and ends with a signature, Shao Yong, the
other side with two signed inscriptions, Beiping Weng Fanggang
guan, ‘Seen by Weng Fanggang of Beiping’, and Jiaxing Zhang
Shuwei cang, ‘treasured by Zhang Shuwei of Jiaxing’.
