     A LONGYAN WOOD CARVING OF A SEATED

     LUOHAN

     QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)

     The emaciated Luohan is shown seated with his right elbow
     resting on his bent right knee and holding prayer beads. He wears
     loose robes draped over either side of the bony chest, revealing his
     spine on the back, and a dhoti tied at the waist. His face is crisply
     carved with prominent cheekbones, protruding forehead, and
     short eyebrows, all set in a contemplative expression.
